Classes

We believe that every child is created individually and that each individual should be nurtured as such.  Your dancer is a special part of the Dance Around family and will have one-on-one attention in each and every class.
 
FAQ: Which class is appropriate for my child? 
Answer:  You'll find a list of class descriptions below.  These are general descriptions for the average student.  Level placement varies for each student and does not always follow the age guidelines.
  Munchkin Classes (under 6 yrs old):

Prerequisites for ALL Munchkin Classes:

  • Student must be at least 2 years (24 months) of age;
  • Student must be completely Potty Trained;
  • Student must be speaking in full, complete sentences.

Class Descriptions
    STAR-Ters - Age
        This class is an introduction to dance and is perfect for the 1st Time Dancer.  Students will learn classroom etiquette, basic steps and basic styles of dance.
            DRESS: Ballet Attire with hair pulled back off of face and neck.
            

    Baby Dancers - Ages 2-3
        Geared toward the beginning dancer, this class focuses mostly on Ballet using creative imagery.
            DRESS: Ballet Attire with hair pulled back off of face and neck.
            

    Teeny Dancers - Ages 3
        Designed for preschool aged children.  We will study mostly ballet and will touch on age-appropriate jazz, tap and hip-hop movements using creative imagery.
            DRESS: Ballet Attire with hair pulled back off of face and neck.
            Spring 2011 Schedule: Tuesdays 10:00-10:45am.  Teeny Performers Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm
              

    Pre-ma Diva Dancers - Ages 5-6
        This class is for Pre-K and Kindergarten students.  We will begin the transitions from munchkin level classes to older level classes and will begin to phase out
creative imagery to increase technical and dance vocabulary for steps.  We will study mostly ballet and will explore some Jazz and Tap.
            DRESS: Ballet Attire with hair pulled back off of face and neck.
            Spring 2012 Schedule: Mondays 5:15-6:00pm.  Pre-ma Diva Performers Thurs 5:15-6:15pm
  
    Small Fry Hip Hop - Ages 3-5
        For Preschool and Pre-K kids who are looking to explore their individual creativity.  GREAT FOR BOYS!!  Also perfect as a 2nd class for kiddos who can't get enough
        dancing.
            DRESS: Hip-Hop or Jazz attire
            

    Diva Hip Hop - Ages 5-7
        For Kindergartners and younger 1st graders. We will explore our individual creativity and personalities.  GREAT FOR BOYS!!! and as a 2nd class for kiddos who can't
        get enough dance.
            DRESS: Hip-Hop or Jazz attire
            

    Bitty Performers - Ages 3-6
        It is strongly recommended that students have at least 1 full, solid session to 1 full year of technique classes prior to enrolling in a performance class.  Kids will
        learn the responsibility of learning choreography and get the glamor of getting dressed-up and dancing as a character on stage.  Additional time and financial
        commitments are required.
            DRESS: Ballet Attire
         
    

  Ballet
Prerequisites:
  • Student must be at least 6 years of age;
  • Upper levels are determined by instructors based on technique assessments.
Description:
        Watch your child gain grace and poise through the years with this classical technique.  As the foundation for all dance forms, ballet will help increase your child's balance, flexibilty, body alignment and strength.  Dance Around studies mostly Cecchetti Technique (The Italian School) though we do incorporate the other styles as well.

  Pointe
Prerequisites:
  • Pointe Students are based on ability and by instructor referral only. 
  • For safety reasons, typical minimum qualifications for pointe are: 
    • Student must be at least 12 years of age
    • Student must have been in a ballet technique class for a minimum of 2 years
    • Student must have participated in Pointe Strengthening classes for a minimum of 1 year
    • Student must be able to properly complete 25 releves on (each) one foot in a parallel position without  the use of support
    • Student must be able to properly demonstrate "doming"
    • Student must be able to isolate movement of the big toe

An extention of Classical Ballet, Pointe requires the use of specialized "Pointe" shoes in order to fully dance on your toes. 

A typical Pointe Student, or Pre-Pointe Student, should carry with them at all times the following strengthening tools (required for Pointe Strengthening classes at Dance Around):  1) Theraband; 2) One Pair of Toe Separators; 3) 2 Tennis Balls; 4) A Hand Towel. 

Other great tools to carry are: toe nail clippers and nail file (pedicure kit), bandaids, dental floss and a thicker sewing needle, a lighter.

        Jazz 
Prerequisites:
  • Student must be at least 6 years of age;
  • Upper levels are determined by instructors based on technique assessments.

Description:
    Lots of high kicks, quick turns, exciting leaps and fast feet take place in this class.  Awareness of
 music and rhythm (musicality) is fused with technique to create a fun style to dance and watch.

Hip-Hop
Prerequisites:
  • Student must be at least 8 years of age;
Description:
        Rhythm and personality are the two essentials of this class.  A funky class allowing your child to break out of their shell as they develop confidence, individuality and self-esteem.

 Lyrical
Prerequisites:
  • Student must be at least 10 years of age;
  • Student must have a strong background in Ballet and/or Jazz
  • Students are recommended to continue ballet and jazz classes while taking lyrical
  • Students are recommended to take conditioning and turns & leaps to get maximum benefits
Description:
 
    Your child will tell a story through dance.  This is an interpretive class increasing your child's spatial awareness and inner beauty while stylistically dancing to the lyrics and feelings of the music.
